      Gaelic is the common but incorrect term for Irish and Scottish traditional languages, both of which are Celtic in origins from the Goidelic branch of the Indo-European family of languages. In Ireland, the language is called Irish, while in Scotland, the correct term is Gaelic. Gaelic Ireland refers to the period when a Gaelic political and social order existed in Ireland, and to the culture associated with emerged in the prehistoric era and lasted until the early 17th century. For most of this period, Ireland was a 'patchwork' [1] hierarchy of territories ruled by a hierarchy of kings or chiefs, who were elected by a system known as tanistry.
